Baahubali

I watched the first part of Baahubali in Vinayaka theatre on its first day, first show along with two of my colleagues. After witnessing the interval scene where Baahubali single handedly saves the people from getting crushed under the monumental statue of Bhallaladeva, all of us thought Rajamouli has completely lost it. We compared that scene with Balayya’s stunts like the one where he reverses the train by slapping his thigh. After the movie was over, all of thought that the movie was well made but might fail at the box office. Defying our predictions, the movie went on to become the biggest grosser in the history of Indian cinema at that point. That, obviously raised an interesting question. Why did the movie succeed?

Before I attempt to give my opinion about the question, I would like to tell about an interesting article I read recently. The article discusses persuasive ad techniques. It says that there are three ways to sell a product, Pathos, Ethos and Logos. The Pathos technique involves appealing to the emotions and feelings of the customer. For example, Patanjali markets its products as swadeshi products and tried to appeal to the patriotic sentiments of the people. Ethos involves using credibility to sell products. Toothpaste ads are the best examples for this technique. ’99% of dentists in India believe that Colgate helps you avoid dental problems’. Since dentists are the authority on the subject, we believe, Colgate is the best toothpaste. Third technique is Logos. This is the age old technique where we try to persuade people using logic. For example, ‘vaccination prevents Covid as per carefully conducted medical trials, so please get vaccinated’

Now, let’s understand how Baahubali was sold to us. We all remember that it was marketed as the pride of Indian Cinema, the magnum opus etc. Here, they’re using Pathos technique to convince us. They’re appealing to our patriotic sentiments to sell the product. Similarly, numerous reviews talked about how South Indian films are a class apart from the Bollywood. Such reviews appeal to the emotions of people belonging to the South which is the main market of the movie. Then, there’re promotion events. The entire film industry came together to sing paeans about the movie. People like Karan Johar called it the master piece. However, there were some reviews where they criticised the movie for not giving enough space for the female protagonists. Of course, the movie had a great story, brilliant action sequences and breath taking visuals. That is the Logos.

The movie ended in a cliffhanger, ‘Why did Kattappa kill Baahubali’. This unleashed a publicity blitzkrieg for the second movie. The entire country discussed why Kattappa killed Baahubali. That was a marketing master stroke. However, all the earlier techniques were used too. It was again marketed as the pride of Indian Cinema, it was again praised by everyone. Added to that, they made sure that the earlier criticism was addressed. The reviews were all praise about how the women of the movie were so powerful and how the movie stood for feminism. Thus, they managed to woo another section of audience which criticised its first part

This is not to say that it’s a bad movie. It definitely is an extremely well made movie. It created a huge market for South movies across India. It had become the torch bearer for fantasy movies and paved the way to make movies like Spiderman etc within India. This is just to say that he movie had achieved such stupendous success because of a brilliant marketing campaign which ran in the background. This is to doff the hat for those who silently worked in the background to create the history

Padalenu Pallavaina
Context: This song comes in the movie called Sindhu Bhairavi. Heroine requests the Hero who is giving the concert to sing in Telugu, the mother tongue of the
audience. The hero, in turn challenges the heroine to sing a song in Telugu and impress the audience. The heroine sings this song as a response to the challenge

I can't sing even a single stanza, as I don't know the language
I cannot give a beat, I don't know about rhythm to be able to do that
I came here to tell you what I thought
I am just saying whatever I can think of in the form of a song.

The lullaby sung by a mother is the greatest Raga
The songs sung by farmers during their work contains exemplary language
The movement of swing itself is the rhythm
The wind from the crops is the flute
Affection is the Raga and the hardwork, the meaning
The entire world is filled with Raga
joys and sorrows of life are the notes
The music of the cuckoo
contains the dawn as its lyrics.

I feel that Raga is overrated, if music lovers excuse me for this gross statement
but, if you listen to any song in your own language
any song can touch your heart.
every soul relaxes to the song
Whether you are right or wrong, say it aloud
Even the song of pestle sounds is very beautiful

// repeat

న..సు...న.. ద..య..రా...

She goes on to sing the swaras and finally asks him why he doesn't show pity for them despite her prayers.

The hero ridicules the songs in local language as ingenuous and cheap. He believes that the songs in Tamil have much higher intellectual content (in the tamil version of the movie, its vice versa) The Heroine refutes it by saying that mother tongue is dear to every one's heart and whatever song, when heard in the mother tongue soothes the soul. There is no greater music than a mother's lullaby or a farmer's folk song. The audience applaud her point of view through their claps.

Thakita thadhimi thakita thadimi thandaana...
Hrudaya layala jathula gathula thillaana...
The rhythm of heart is a beautiful song of Thillana

Thakita thadhimi thakita thadimi thandaana...
Hrudaya layala jathula gathula thillaana... (repeat)

Tadabadu adugula tappani taalaana...
in the rhythm of the faltering steps which remain true to the beat

Tadisina pedavula reygina... raagaana..
In the raga forming from the wet lips

Tadabadu adugula tappani taalaana...
Tadisina pedavula reygina... raagaana...

Shrutini layani okati Cheysi...
by uniting the melody and rhythm

Thakita thadhimi thakita thadimi thandaana...

Hrudaya layala jathula gathula thillaana...

Thakita thadhimi thakita thadimi thandaana...
Hrudaya layala jathula gathula thillaana....

Narudi brathuku natana...
The life of a man is an act

Eeswarudi thalapu ghatana..
The thought of the God is the incident

Aa renti natta naduma neekendukintha thapana..
Why are you so attached despite knowing these?
The poet means that our destiny is the work of God, so stop attaching yourself too much to anything

Narudi brathuku natana...
Eeswarudi thalapu ghatana..
Aa renti natta naduma neekendukintha thapana.. (repeat)

Telusa manasa neekidi telisi alusa...
Oh heart! Do you know this or do you ignore it despite knowing this?
Telisi teliyani aasala vayasee varasaa...
Or is this the game of the half witted age
Telusa manasa neekidi telisi alusaa...
Telisi teliyani aashala la la laa la laaa.... (repeat)

Yetiloni alalavanti kantiloni kalalu kadipi
The waves of the sea are transient. They come and go, similarly the by dreaming
Gunde alanu andiyaluga chesi...
by making the heartbeat as the amulets (dancing to the rhythm of heart!)

Thakita thadhimi thakita thadimi thandaana...
Hrudaya layala jathula gathula thillaana...
Tadabadu adugula tappani tadikitathom tadikitathom tadikitathom

Tadisna pedavula reygina... aa.. aa.. aa...
Shrutini layani okati Cheysi...
Thakita thadhimi thakita thadimi thandana
Hrudaya layala jathula gathula thillaana...

Paluku raaga madhuram..
Your word is a beautiful raga

Nee brathuku natya sikharam
Your life is a summit of dance

Saptha giruluga velisey suswaraala gopuram...
together form the temple of seven hills

Paluku raaga madhuram..
Nee brathuku natya sikharam
Saptha giruluga velisey suswaraala gopuram...
Alarulu kuriyaga naadenadey...
Alakala kulukula alamelmanga....
This is a song written by Annamacharya which means the Godess Alimelmanga dances as the spectators clap (not really sure!) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y96_dW6Cdi0)
Alarulu kuriyaga naadenadey...
Alakala kulukula alamelmanga....
Anna annamayya maata,
This song by Annamayya

Achha thene tenugu paata..
 is a true telugu song

Pallavinchu pada kavithalu paadi...
and I am singing that song which is filled with telugu verses which feel like the taste of honey

Aa..a..aa...aaa..
Aaa..aa...aaa..aaa.

Thakita thadhimi thakita thadimi thandaana...
Hrudaya layala jathula gathula thillaana...
Tadabadu adugula tappani taalaana...
Tadisina pedavula regina... raagaana...
Shruthini layani okati jeysi...
Thakita thadhimi thakita thadimi thandaana...
Hrudaya layala jathula gathula thillaana...

Tarali raada tane vasantam

This song is from the movie Rudraveena. Hero is a son of a legendary musician revered across the country. When he tries to help an old man to cut a tree, people around him request him to sing a song for him. He starts singing an intricate raga and immediately realizes that the audience are not able to appreciate his song. So he goes on to sing the following song.

The spring season arrives in woods which are unable to reach it. The sea always tries to reach the sky through tides. But it can never reach the sky. Hence, the clouds in sky rain to reach the sea/earth. Likewise, music finds its way to the masses even if it becomes more and more elitist over a period of time.

The song continues in the same spirit. The hero says that the moonlight is not restricted to a privileged few. It lights up even the woods. The air doesn't have boundaries. It pleases everyone. The sun which wakes up everyone gives us an egalitarian message. All these things found in nature are not the properties belonging to few people. The whole world is nothing if people cannot share things, both tangible and intangible among themselves. Those who fail to grasp this message are undertaking an aimless journey.

There is no rhythm which exists outside our life. Music is inspired from life. The heart beat also has a rhythmic tempo which is essential for the music. All the arts and stories find their roots in our life. The arts which are not owned by people are useless. Even if the cuckoo which croons melodious songs is gone, the music reappears in the song of a flowing river. Even the flute which contains all the swaras (melodies) cannot create music without the person playing it. Similarly the music which is based on the lives of common people, if moves away from them stops evolving.

Jagamantha kutumbam

Jagamantha Kutumbam Translation
This song is a brain child of Sirivennela Sitarama Sastry for the movie Chakram. Chakri's music added soul to the song. In this blog post, I will attempt to translate this song. In this song, he examines the similarities and the differences that exist between a poet and the Sun. Both poet and sun are givers, of knowledge and energy, of happiness and life.

(Jagamanta kutumbam nadi)
(Ekaki Jeevitam Naadi)
The core philosophy of our country from times immemorial has been that of "vasudhaika kutumbakam" which means the whole world encompassing all the living beings is one. Shankara is a proponent of this philosophy which says that everything is a single entity. The second line in this stanza

(Ekaki Jeevitam Naadi)
doesn't mean a lonely existence. The poet here talks about the oneness existing by itself.

(Samsara Sagaram Naade)
(Sanyasam Soonyam naade)
This stanza means that the worldly life of a person as well as the ascetic life of a saint, both are his (Poet's)

(Kavinai Kavitanai Bharyanai Bhartanai)
(Kavinai Kavitanai Bharyanai Bhartanai)
Poem is the creation of a poet. The Poet is saying that he is the poem (the essence/meaning, the creation) as well as the poet ( the creator)

Husband is the bearer of the responsibility (wife, భరించేవాడు భర్త ) as well as the responsibility.
(Mallela darilo manchu edari lo)
(Mallela darilo manchu edari lo)
(Panneeti jaya geetala)
(Kanneeti Jalapaatala)

I (poet) travel on the path of jasmines (showers of praise during the success) as well as on a path in a desert filled with snow (the failure)

I, traveling along with myself, I , enjoying with myself.

I, exist alone in the dreams and stories (history is created by people like me), words and songs (again the words and songs are created by people), colours and the decoration of colours, poem referred to as a young girl and girls.

He goes on to describe Sun in the next stanzas.
I (Sun) provide vision by being the light and energy. The world cannot see anything without light, cannot comprehend anything without the energy (for the world doesn't exist without the energy of sun, కంటను మంటను నేనై)

I am the good heart (వెన్నెల) behind the heat, for the world doesn't exist without that heat. I am the heat behind the moon. I am the sun and the moon ( the moon shines because of sun), I am the light and the darkness

I am the creator of rays of light, the incidence of light to enable the living organisms like deers (చరణాల) , the movement of the deers, the unknown destinations the movement leads to , the time and the magic.
